Understanding Percent-Encoding
Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) reserve certain characters for structural delimiters (such as :, /, ?, #, [, ], @, !, $, &, ', (, ), *, +, ,, ;, =). All other characters, especially spaces, non-ASCII Unicode characters, and binary symbols, must be percent-encoded (%HH) using UTF-8 byte sequences.
encodeURI vs. encodeURIComponent
Developers often confuse JavaScript's encodeURI and encodeURIComponent:
- encodeURI: Intended for complete URLs; preserves protocol and path delimiters (: / ? # & =).
- encodeURIComponent: Intended for individual query parameter keys and values; safely encodes all reserved characters including & and = to avoid breaking the query string structure.
